Mirror Images examines the evil forces of nationalism and religious extremism and the dangers they pose to global peace and national security. Moreover, it examines what motivates and sustains the dedication of several terrorist groups around the globe (most recently ISIS) to do harm to countries, including their citizens, which do not conform to their radical ideology and religion. The book started by going back to the birth of Islam in the seventh century and the Islamic empires that followed from Arabia to Andalusia: it covered the emergence of Mongols and Seljuk Turks; the Ottoman conquests and the Golden age of Islam; the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the creation of modern Middle East. The first leg of the journey concluded with the resurrection of the vision of an Islamic nation, including the birth, evolution and mutation of Islamic fundamentalism movements all the way to present-time global terrorist networks. This part, moreover, can be viewed as a historical, religious and cultural journey in the heartlands of Islam, aimed at enriching the knowledge of the reader about Islam and Muslims. The second part of the journey took the reader to the holy wars of Christendom with all the violence and treachery that characterized that era; examined the creation and rise of neoconservatives in America in the second half of the twentieth century, and looked at the terrifying mirror images of Islamism and Christianism. A timeless diatribe the topics of which are destined to be repeated again and again unless we eliminate the evil at its core.
