Walks with Khalil......: True and Self Explanatory Poems
Joi Anna
Walks with Khalil is a circular collection of war-love poems. In it, you will discover a broken heart and the path to healing. It is not just a collection of words; it is an exercise in visualization. It is designed to be read from either cover to the middle. The author warns: ?Please do not read cover to cover!? The term War-Love comes out of the author?s experiences and observations of life on the South Side of Chicago. People of Color are disproportionately represented in prisons, and their children are systematically and unknowingly deprived of elementary education. As a result of historical oppression and discrimination, poverty runs rampant. It has become far more likely for an individual to be shot or a victim of some form of violence on the South Side of Chicago than in active military duty. Many American citizens of color are in a war that they did not choose or create. If liberation and equality is to be created between humans; people of color must love themselves and attempt to make love work for their families and larger society. To love during war is to overcome a host of dis-orders; it is to fight, despite the odds, for the survival of the nation. These poems are a simplified account of war-love. Walks with Khalil takes a stand for the power of unconditional love, and the overall belief in the American Dream.
