Some Time Till Knowing traces Luke Aurmann?s journey of self-discovery. Spurred by his father?s death, Luke leaves St. Louis, his family, friends, and Elizabeth Donahue, the young woman he loves. In the spring of 1971, he travels to Boulder, Colorado. Eventually, he rents a basement apartment in Julia Karsten?s home. Boulder becomes a serene retreat for Luke, a place where he finds meaning in his daily experience. He believes in his capacity to bridge the gaps that he has created, especially the distance he has placed between himself and Elizabeth. But, circumstances evolve to challenge Luke, and he struggles to understand his deepest desires. As the inner turmoil plays out, Luke is also confronted by Clay Williams, Julia?s lover and father of her newborn son. Clay provides a stark contrast to Luke?s personality and way of being. The story unfolds as Luke becomes more involved with Julia and her young family, his attraction to Julia heightened by each interaction. Confrontations between Luke and Clay intensify until their inevitable clash. A key element in the resolution of the story is the strength of the two women in Luke?s life. Individually, Elizabeth and Julia are compelled to make life-changing decisions. Their choices pull Luke into the bright light of truth and illuminate his path to self-knowing.
