His entire crew was lost by drowning after parachuting from the plane when strong winds took them out over the North Sea. Fictional Captain Jennings, the last to jump, delayed the opening of his chute and safely landed in Holland where he was taken by members of the Dutch Resistance and placed in hiding in the city of Utrecht, Holland. He assumed a surprising identity of being a severely retarded man to cover his lack of speaking Dutch and joined the Resistance where he led and participated in numerous acts of sabotage against the German occupiers. After the war ends, he is invited back to Utrecht to accept an award from the city where he was hidden in honor of his exploits as well as an unexpected surprise.
