For centuries, the kingdom of Victrial has enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity known as the Great Millennium. All citizens are equal, crime is nonexistent, and violence is abhorred. The Battle of Gladenfell Tor was a massacre, with the sun rising over the corpses of five thousand Nelvan mercenaries and all three hundred knights under Sir Geoffrey Valhurst's command. Valhurst himself lies dying, comforted by the Faerie Aerianna, one of the Divine Seven Sisters.

Refusing to let Sir Geoffrey die, Aerianna and her sisters transport him to the mysterious Mesmer, leaving the kingdom believing the brave knight died on the field. The ploy allows Geoffrey and his friends opportunity to seek out the traitor behind the Nelvan invasion.
