What if the world's economy is truly as bad as some suspect? What if global debt has become unsustainable, and a cycle of recession has become unstoppable? How will our society react to another great depression? What would you do to protect yourself and the ones you love? These are the questions that Paul Daniels must answer for himself as he watches storm clouds gather. Abroad, Western economies-Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy- are collapsing left and right. At home, the U. S. is showing every indication of meeting the same fate. Seeing no action from politicians and scant concern from the press, he sees bad times ahead. Plagued by visions of scarce resources, a desperate population, and a crumbling society, Paul devises a plan to create a sanctuary, a refuge, a haven-literally, an Island. On The Island, Paul's small band will be able to feed itself, defend itself, and survive the anarchy that he cannot prevent. As the fuse burns and the Paul's visions begin to materialize, he must work furiously but quietly to prepare for his escape. Making some of the hardest choices in his life, he can trust only a handful of friends with his secret. If anyone outside of his small circle were to know, the Island would fail. With the help of his closest friend, he marshals his resources and gets to work while his worst fears begin to come alive. As the country's economy collapses and around the U. S. society plunges into anarchy, Paul's troop must push through increasing lawlessness to make it The Island. But are they truly safe? As federal, state, and local governments attempt to restore order, how will they respond to groups who do not want their help?
