Adrienne Lorenson is beautiful and rich. She owns a hotel in the English Lake District and is about to buy another. Then she meets Marco Channing, a dashing waiter and offers him a job as Assistant Manager at her new hotel. Everything seems set for a happy future for them both, but Mandy Travis has her eye on Marco and wants him for herself. Thus begins a series of setbacks. Mistrust, misunderstanding, pride and temper constantly come between them, making one or other of them retreat to safety. Adrienne finds herself an object of attention by the arrogant Stoyen, a former friend, and the aristocractic Count Gianluca Rossi, while Marco is pursued by the unrelenting Mandy.
