My Summer with the King
Melissa Goodman
The summer of 1953 would introduce three men to May Richards who would change her life forever. Mama Rose's man, Nick. The town runabout, Jack. And the future King of Rock n' Roll Elvis Presley. May, older sister to Daisy, is eleven and heavily influenced by her good time lovin' cousin, sixteen year old Thelma. Mama Rose is caretaker to them all and in the summer of 1953 they've just moved into their first new house. While it isn't a mansion it's theirs and Mama Rose works hard to keep them in it and make a home for her girls. Soon after moving in she meets the neighbor's grandson, the enigmatic Elvis. Even though there's an age gap there's a kinship and the two become confidants and friends of one another. Then there's Jack, the thirteen year old who quickly captures May's imagination as the resourceful boy from the wrong side of the tracks. But when Mama Rose falls for Nick a dark cloud enters May's life. And soon it's not just a wonderful summer anymore, it becomes a fight for her life and she must decide keep the secret or go down fighting.
