On my many road trips, I've wished that I had more information: about the place I'm going to and what's up ahead (I need a Laundromat!, where is the library, is the road paved)? Often, we'd be driving through a small town not even mentioned in a guide book, other towns had one or two listings. But I wanted more (is there a cafe up ahead? Who is this wilderness area named for?). So I created these books as a resource for myself. And when others started asking me for copies, the (Almost) Comprehensive guide series was born. It's an evolving process but the focus is on areas not covered by most guidebooks providing the info necessary for (almost) all practicalities, attractions, lodging, and dining, while adding media connections as well as history, culture and scientific tid bits about the area. The idea is to satisfy a traveler's curiosity while also giving useful information. Each description provides the information necessary to contact and find the destination, and, where possible, additional description about the place and, in some cases, further information about the history, geology, or background. Because I have attempted to include a broad range of travel spots, I haven't visited them all, so detail may be limited in some cases. I have focused on description over evaluation. Where possible, maps are also included. At the end of the book are additional media resources, including books and videos, for those interested in knowing more about the destinations. This seventh edition of the series focuses on Western Sicily, a mix of coast, mountains and ancient history. Small quaint historic towns and nature reserves and beaches make it well worth visiting, with excellent outdoor recreation, culture and lots and lots of churches.
