Gerry, a present day teenager from New York City is newly arrived in Vermont and unhappy about it. Coming under the spell of hemlock trees, which exert magical powers in certain circumstances, he finds himself back in the 1770s in the company of the Green Mountain Boys, and meets Ethan Allen. With them, he experiences history., including the capture of Fort Ticonderoga and the battle of Hubbardton. Also caught up by the power of the hemlock, Gerry's Classmate Carla joins him in exploring the Republic of Vermont as it finally overcomes its many foes in its fight to become the 14th state of the United States.
