Hugh Fitzgerald left his native Castlemore in Co Kerry in 1912 to seek his fortune in America. His departure was overshadowed by speculation of a family rift that might well have sealed his decision to emigrate. Latent resentments, emotions and regrets remained a lifetime thorn in his side. In his twilight years he yearned for a rapprochement with his Irish relatives but failing health determined that he would not personally see his dream fulfilled. The task of re-establishing transatlantic relations and reconciling family differences was bequeathed to his son John. Complying somewhat apprehensively with his rueful father's dying wishes, John Fitzgerald sets out to track down his Irish relatives in an effort to restore lapsed contact with them. What will his visit to Ireland reveal?
