JUST CALL ME JOE: THE STORY OF A BOY, AN EAGLE AND A SPECIAL SUMMER
This book will be of interest to readers in grades three through six. It will be educational on many levels. Joey and Buddy are fictional characters, but the reader will learn about the culture of the Native American tribe to which they belong.
The story is historically correct in that the oil spill actually did happen in 1989 in Valdez, Alaska. The reader will learn interesting facts about the bald eagles, including their size and abilities.
The setting is authentic. The Raptor Rehabilitation Center still exists, though it has moved to a new and better facility and is now called The Alaska Raptor Center.
Joey finding the injured eagle sets off a set of circumstances that change his summer plans and perhaps his life-long plan.
