A fat little bay pony named Jakey is the highlight of ten year old Emmie's summer. They spend lazy days learning to jump and riding through winding trails. Jakey and Emmie find adventure one night when they discover a trapped baby deer. They have to make it back to the barn to get help before the baby deer gets hurt. "Sshh, it's ok," she said as she backed away. She wondered where his mother was or what had happened to him. It was too late in the season for deer hunters. Emmie waited until he was quiet again as she sat very, very still. Then she slowly back out of the clearing through the tangled vines and joined Jakey again. "Jakey, we have to get home and get some help for this poor baby," she said to Jakey as she climbed back onto his back.
