What We Pretend To Be
Poffertje Von Puffelin
Marv is haunted. Not by a ghost, or a memory, but by something far more mysterious: a social network profile claiming to be him. The name, the picture, and the history are Marv's, but he cannot choose what it shows-and it shows a different type of Marv.
This social network doppelgänger arises just as Marv leaves his stable New York City life for London, England, where he is to take part in a work-related contest known as the Project. In London, Marv tries to leave New York Marv behind and reinvent himself among new friends and coworkers, hoping that none of his new acquaintances ever see the lies on the doppleprofile. But despite everything, as Marv struggles to keep up with the Project and adjust to life abroad the doppleprofile slowly steers his identity in entirely new directions.
As Marv reinvents himself again and again, he begins to realize that it is only through the doppleprofile that he can truly know himself-or at least the man he pretends to be.
