As George and Esther Hadley stood and looked at the scared young woman in their barn, there was no way they could tell the story that her family had lived for three generations. Her Grandmother had been betrayed and sold into slavery in Africa. She had endured the torment of the middle passage across the Atlantic. Liza's mother refused to allow the thought of another generation to be kept in bondage. She was determined to get Liza out, so her grandchild would be born free. Though Liza was scared to leave her mother, she had ventured out. She met with tragedy and failure, but her mother refused to except defeat. Liza had experienced amazing kindness from complete strangers, and yet had to suffer unbelievable cruelty. After all that, she is in a strangers barn in strange place, and about to give birth.
