Danny Roberts and Jeannie LoneTree live in an impoverished coal camp in Wyoming's Scarlet Desert. Their longing to break free from their dirt-poor existence led to a half-serious hunt for pirate treasure in Jeannie's Golden Key, plunging them into a war for control of the universe between primordial gods-a war that can only be won with the teenagers' help.

Following a tangled trail of riddles and clues, Danny and Jeannie stumble into a secret buried within the Boar's Tusk, an ancient volcanic formation. There the two will discover Jeannie's golden key, once thought to be a mere family heirloom, has the power to unlock secrets capable of transcending time and space-and possibly solve the mystery of death itself.

As Danny and Jeannie explore their growing power and love for each other, another force is in motion. Local crazy LeRoy Nabal, better known to the gods as Lord Mochcom, has killed for the golden key before. To serve his lord, the dark god Zuron, Mochcom will gladly murder again. Should he wrest control of the secret of the Boar's Tusk from the two teens, the universe will fall under Zuron's sway-with unspeakable results.
