(normal parrots find it poisonous) EXCERPT: Opening week at Tiwaka's Tiki Bar & Grill had been a resounding success. Picking January to open had been a great idea, plenty of tourists and our famously dry and sunny weather here on the planet's most accommodating island. But, there were risks associated with January. The days were shorter, and, therefore, the nights were longer. It wasn't an extreme dichotomy like you would find in Alberta or Anchorage, but that three and a half hour difference in daylight had a distinct effect on the local labor force. Tropical folks didn't mind working when the sun was up, but watch out when it went down, or even got close to that shimmering horizon. It was like a heavy gravitational syrup moved into their veins. Things slowed down. Way down. Less productivity. Added to this was the fact that January was the month we received our seasonal blessings from the north. Big waves. Every young man and woman who could swim, hold their breath for a full two minutes underwater when necessary and had the courage to do so were challenging their friends, themselves and nature itself. God bless 'em, but that cut into productivity as well. Finally, and most folks would find this observation ludicrous, but it could get cold here. Yes, I said that nasty four letter word. That particular four letter word, of all the four letter words in English that were commonly heard in Lahaina, that was rarely uttered. C. O. L. D. The same storm would soon slam into the Canadian west coast with several feet of snow had a wispy little tail that had crossed the channel between Molokai and Honolulu during the night and continued across Maui at dawn. People were seen physically shaking all over town. It was so cold.... HOW COLD WAS IT? It was so cold I would have worn two pairs of socks if I owned more than one. Fortunately, I was keeping warmer than most since I was hauling into the bar one of Pa's record setting Haiku banana stalks. It had to be over a hundred pounds. Of course, it was heavier than it should have been.... Tiwaka was perched on the top as I struggled to get it hung on the hook next to the vodka. When he had to work it was stints at the Honolulu airport, as a cargo handler, Air Traffic Control radio, Airline Flight Operations Dispatcher. Part time gigs included computer programmer and an amateur lobster fisherman. Having traveled extensively to all of the Hawaiian islands, Tahiti, Bali, Australia and a few places he has sworn to keep secret, Mr. Peacock has lived, and continues to do through his writing, a life as colorful as his name. He lives halfway up a dormant volcano flank with his wife, four kids, two dogs, some cats and a nice view. He can sometimes be found hanging out at Tiwaka's Tiki Bar & Grill.
