Stories from the Wasteland
David Boyer
The year: 2018. The place: The wastelands of an apocalyptic world once known as North America. A virulent strain of rabies found within infected meat is slowly but surely poisoning the nomadic survivors left behind after the world-wide apocalypse of 2012. There are no cattle left; only deer, fox, wolves, horses, and other various forms of local wildlife remain as a source of meat. The consumption of the infected meat results in a high fever, severe dehydration, cold sweats, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and eventually a state of psychosis, accompanied by random acts of physical violence. Entrepreneurs of the nearly dead use the virus-induced, zombie-like victims as gladiators in a makeshift arena filled with bloodthirsty spectators, and the newly-deceased are added to the food chain. There is no longer a medium between the living and the dead. Only a real-life purgatory known as the wastelands.
