The world of Bourn seems like it's straight out of a fairy tale - but that world is growing up. New technology is being developed, including 'gateways'; devices that allow travelers to bridge the gap across the stars to other worlds. For over a decade these gateways have been kept secret from the general population and used only by an elite band of explorers. The secret is ripped wide open when a race of vicious creatures, the vekling, find a way to cross the gap from their world into others, leaving a trail of death behind them. One raid on a village has left only a few survivors, including the idealistic young tour guide Will and his bookish older brother Isaac. They fall into the company of Jude, a charismatic if somewhat vain knight who is prominent in the campaign to force the vekling out of the land. But just how are the vekling able to travel from their own world to Bourn? The answer they discover is every bit as horrifying as the monsters themselves...
