Historical Sketch and Roster Of The Georgia 53rd Infantry Regiment
John C Rigdon
The Georgia 53rd Infantry Regiment completed its organization during the spring of 1862. It was soon ordered to Virginia and assigned to General Semmes', Bryan's, and Simms' Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The unit fought with the army from Seven Days' Battles to Gettysburg, then accompanied Longstreet to Georgia. However, it did not arrive in time to share in the conflict at Chickamauga. After serving at Knoxville, the 53rd was involved in the Battles of The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, Early's operations in the Shenandoah Valley, and the Appomattox Campaign.
