Zeke Mortensen is a man with a plan to survive the Apocalypse without taking the mark. For three and a half years he has gotten along, creating a safe haven for himself in a world that has been all but wiped out by global catastrophes. The supervolcano at Yellowstone has erupted while the "Big One" along the San Andreas Fault finally shook the West coast of the US into the Pacific Ocean. What is left of America is going through years of winter weather brought about by millions of tons of volcanic ash in the atmosphere. More than half of the US is dead within a month of these disasters while billions across the world starve when the "grain basket" of America is reduced to sulfuric ash. During all this, Zeke has managed to survive and he plans to keep on surviving. His methods are criminal, but Zeke is not a man who cares much for laws. Then one day he meets Martin, a boy who reminds him of his own dead son. Martin drags Zeke back into the world and before he knows it, Zeke has become the leader of a small community trying to survive the Apocalypse without taking the mark that would allow them to buy, sell or trade. Now, three and a half years into the Apocalypse, the Beast is reaching out to what is left of America and it is up to Zeke to keep his new family safe from that unrelenting grasp.
