Romance, comedy and mystery abound as a beautiful college professor rents her garage apartment to an official "man of mystery." Theodora "Teddi" Penn makes possibly the worst first impression in history. Sam Cooper is trying to lie low in the small, steamy Florida town. He soon discovers that life around the beautiful but naïve genius is never going to be quiet. He resolves to leave, but a series of apparent threats against his red-haired landlady make him stay, even as the dark secrets of his past threaten. Teddi can't figure out why this imposing man wants to rent a small apartment and throw in yard work besides. She admits he's nice to have around. When her obnoxious ex-husband turns up pressuring her for money, and a possible hurricane threatens, she is at her wits end. Oh, and there is a serial killer in the area. Suddenly the secretive stranger with the immaculate references is making her wonder just what she's gotten herself into. Sam is in awe that someone so intelligent gets herself in the most unusual and sometimes dangerous situations. But part of the reason he can't leave is that he's falling in love. He also knows that he can't stay because his very presence in putting her in danger.
