During compulsory military training, ghettos did not grow - there was a way out for military-aged men (and women) who chose to live in a different part of the United States after serving their country. The welfare system did not grow; all young men and women had an opportunity to receive some job training that could be utilized after they completed their tour of duty. Our prison system did not grow - most young people who got into trouble had a choice - the military or prison. Now we have more people in prison than any other country in the world! What happened to discipline, responsibility, punctuality, self-respect and respect for parents, authority and the principles our country was founded on? What happened to the acceptance of others' races, languages, religions and traditions? Young people no longer have a direction once they finish high school, or quit. Are we becoming a country of hate and hopelessness? Seven Presidents (4 Republican and 3 Democrat) have not brought the country in line; we continue America's Downward Slide.
