Religion teaches us that we have to earn God's love through our performances. That, we have to get our lives together and live right before God can ever love us. We cannot earn God's love. No one can. He chose to love us even before the foundation of the earth in spite of us. God hates sin, but He loves the sinner and wants the best for us. He chose to love us before we ever heard or thought about Him. He chose to love us even when we were sinners, unworthy and helpless. It was His great love for us that moved Him to send His Son Jesus, into the world to die for us on the cross, so we can have relationship with Him and enjoy life to the full. His love for us is not dependent on us, but on Who He is. God is love and He will never stop loving you because of what Jesus did for you, and nothing can take away His love for you!
