'Jo, the locked self.' He could not communicate, he would not play. He was locked into himself, and lost in a world of fear, violence and rage. The story of 'Jo', a fictional child, who represents all children who have experienced developmental trauma through neglect, abuse, alcohol, drugs and/or loss. Jo comes from a difficult family situation that includes most of the hardships one normally thinks of when considering a troubled childhood. The psychotherapist is tasked with connecting with him and helping to bring about positive behaviour and self-discovery.
