Children of Tulus Stuart A Schlegel
Children of Tulus
Stuart A Schlegel
This is a collection of essays written by Professor Schlegel over the years of his research among the Teduray people of the southern Philippines, who were previously known as the "Tiruray." It includes a short introductory description of their society and culture, and essays on such topics as their relationship to the neighboring Maguinanaon people, their traditional use of the night sky as a calendar, the transition of many Teduray from traditional rainforest life to a very different peasant Filipino life, and a comparative description and nutritional analysis of the diets of both groups. Finally, it presents Schlegel's translation from the original Teduray of a short 19th century book, written by a Teduray and dictated to a Spanish Jesuit missionary, on the customs of his people.
