Tarzan of the Apes

Burroughs' Tarzan of the Apes remains vibrant and beloved throughout the years. But, why? There may be many reasons, but I think the following two have something to do with it: (1) The presence of a prototype, and (2) Sentence openers. The author bequeathed for posterity a prototype character: Tarzan. This feat together with a wise use of English syntax-in particular his sentence openers-make Tarzan a masterpiece. A classic. Authors who create literary prototypes achieve immortality. Among the ancients we have the Greek playwrights: Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Later we have, Shakespeare (Hamlet, Falstaff, etc.) and Cervantes (Don Quixote). Closer to our time we have Jane Austen (Mr. Darcy), Nabokov (Lolita), Kafka (Gregor Samsa, Joseph K), Salinger (Holden), Fitzgerald (Gatsby). Tarzan of the Apes has joined the ranks of the immortals.
