Policing the Survival Brain: Improving Police Efficacy was written by Dr. John "Jay" Hall to address the need for understanding how the brain works during stressful encounters. As a law enforcement practitioner for 30 plus years, I, like my brothers in blue, experienced many stressful situations. Most of these situations are not about the people involved (race, class, gender, or religion specify) but more about the behavior of the people involved. Whether as police or as a citizen, the information shared by neuroscientist is critical to help both police and citizens manage how we respond to stressful situations. This book serves as a primer for current de-escalation training and identifies some of the challenges that police departments will face in implementing such training programs. As an extension of previous themes of improving police community relations and building trust, this author continues to advocate a systems approach to criminal justice reform which emphasizes the alignment of: a) micro and macro crime strategies; b) policies, procedurals, and training; and c) the leader's heart and mind accompanied by both intra- and interpersonal skills. This book can be found along with its' companion books, "Changing Our Thought Process: The Road to Meaningful Police Community Relations" and "Re-Engineering Police Community Relations: Developing a Trust IQ" at Amazon Books or Createspace.
