The Georgia 59th Infantry Regiment was formed in the spring of 1862. After serving for some time in Georgia and North Carolina, the unit moved to Virginia. The unit was attached to General G. T. Anderson's Brigade in "early 1863" for the remainder of the war. The 59th GA Regiment was present at Fort Powhatan on the James River around April 1863 when it was relieved by the 10th Battalion GA Volunteers. The 59th fought first at Gettysburg where it lost more than 25% of the 525 engaged. Following Gettysburg, the 59th was sent to Charleston for a time, then returned to Virginia and accompanied Longstreet to Tennessee where it participated in Chickamauga and the bettle of Knoxville. Returning once again to Virginia, the 59th continued the war there, surrendering at Appomattox. Fifteen officers and 251 men were present at the surrender.
