This book is based on a fieldwork study that was conducted over a period of three months in 2002 in a women's refuge on the outskirts of London, England. The author was an MSc. student in Social Anthropology at the Brunel University in Uxbridge, U. K., at the time as well as working for the National Health Service (NHS) as a health professional. The original manuscript has been revised to suit the general and specialised reader and included is an 'epilogue' section with recent information.
