"I don't feel an evil spirits or dark malevolent being," she whispered, as she took another step down the darkened stairs. A powerful odor met Annie as she descended below ground. It was mixed with the aroma she was well acquainted with, freshly turned earth. The other odor, one she was not familiar with was a musty, decrepit smell, like the remnants of ages gone by. Another step and she caught site of a reflection, a candle. It was from my dream, she thought. A low twinkle shone off the damp stones ahead of her, down at the bottom of the thirty foot shaft. This is all part of my vision, she thought. It's happening right before my eyes!" Her heart raced as she took the last ten steps. She was filled with a feeling of success. It was a vindication of her special gift. I can see the future, she thought. The excitement of the moment overwhelmed her sense of caution. The feeling that a dark presence had been watching, which had accompanied her vision earlier, was blocked by her overwhelming sense of success. "Let's see what those stuffy old church elders say about this," she said to herself. "A young Amish teen with proven supernatural powers, that news will flip the Bishop's wig." With every step Annie drew closer to the dark presence, an ancient evil that waited in the shadows. She had not completely disregarded the thoughts of caution and concern but rather embraced them as part of her vision. She stepped into the cell hoping to see incredible things ... what she saw was nothing short of horrifying. A skeletal figure in tatter black rags sat, legs pulled up, on a stone bench grinning at Annie from across the small cell. She let out a small scream. The whole scene shocked her. The frightening appearance of the skeleton, in course black rags, his thumbs and toes bound together by some shackling device. It looked like a museum diorama from the Spanish Inquisition she had seen on one of the mandatory field trips the state made Amish schools provide it's students. She crossed the cell that had clearly been roughly hewn out of the rock and stone of the mountaintop. She crouched down to get a better look and was face to face with the devil himself. She could not have known that from this point on her life would be inexorably changed. She had stepped into a world of ancient magic and enchantment. The warlock was alive and Annie's life was in mortal danger. Her next step might be her last.
