The Humanities and Good Governance
Moses Akin Makinde
The theme of our tenth convocation was The Humanities and Good Governance. Professor B. Olatunji Oloruntimehin presented the Convocation Lecture on Man in Society as Template of Good Governance. Professor Moses Akin Makinde's The Humanities and Good Governance: A Philosophical Appraisal and Professor Jide Osuntokun's paper on The Judiciary and the sustenance of Democracy and Good Governance in Nigeria, 1999-2008 were presented at the Scientific Session of the Convocation. The three contributions in this volume are, from their varied perspectives, concerned with demonstrating the importance of education in the humanities, the knowledge, appreciation and application of which would normally impact positively on institutions and processes of good governance. As in other climes, studies in the humanities could empower actors in state and society with intellectual capacity and orientation which move such actors to political and social behaviours that are conducive to promoting the good of man in society as part of humanity. Education in the humanities is a sine qua non and bedrock in building and managing the affairs of every nation and society through enlightened minds that put the nation and society above self, and that would act in appreciation of the fact that enlightened self-interest is best pursued as an inseparable part of the general interest. In the final analysis, the integrating attributes of society are embedded in the processes of good governance. When this is so, the nation is stable and strong, and good governance will translate to economic and social development of the people. The strong state will be a product of the strong society.
