Meria and Seth Maat are lucky ones, their natural skills and talents enough to make them more useful than most to the society that has arisen after the Apocalypse decimated Earth. With high Utility Rankings, they should have access to all the new world has to offer, and both strive to improve their Rankings in every waking moment. But a glitch in the programme, a malfunction of the chips embedded in their brains, allows them to see what they should not: that far from being beaten in a life or death competition, their parents were, in fact murdered. As everything they have ever believed and lived for slowly begins to crumble, the Maats are faced with an almost impossible choice. Should they avenge the deaths of their parents, letting their precious Rankings fall to the point where they will be terminated? Or should they ignore the crushing headaches and strange messages that the Others are sending them and focus only on living the lives they know? In the end, Meria and Seth can do only what they know to be right. The Others promise to look for answers, but do Meria and Seth know the right questions to ask?
