The story follows three orphans and their growing relationship with their mysterious foster father, with whom they are forced to make a journey together, after being separated from the rest of their family. In this, their first journey away from Homeham, the children will see many new things; some of them frightening and some of them beautiful. They will see how unjust things can be, but using their gifts, they will also prove that even they can make a difference by partaking in adventures that they could only have dreamed of. The children will learn how important friendship is, as they help new friends they have made; counting amongst them both lions and beasts. All the while and without even noticing, the children grow, as does their relationship with each other and their foster father. He himself also learns things from the children and they help him to feel alive once again.
