When the young earl Eileen hopes to marry is lost in action, presumed to be killed over a village near Cambrai, not long after the big battle there in the winter of 1917, she finds she cannot believe he is actually dead and formulates an extremely daring-and to all appearances utterly impossible-plan to find him and bring him home.
