California: Once Upon a Time by Robert Flood captures many of the best historical events "from A to Z" that have made California great. The book is very readable. The author's ancestors on all sides ventured to California in the 1800s by clipper ship, covered wagon and transcontinental railroad. I believe this rich heritage contributes to the authentic historical "feel" of his writing. The author and I were both early day products of California Polytechnic's school of journalism at San Luis Obispo. There in the mid 50s we both served as editors of its campus newspaper, El Mustang. "California is younger than you think," the author insists. Let these pages take you into its fascinating past.
