Jimmy Jurrell High School is a specialty high school where the students are taught more than the core subjects. This high school, where students catch up their correct grade, is a school where the teachers cannot simply teach the basics. Every day, students go to school with problems that are important to them firmly on their minds. Instead of wishing the problems away or pretending they do not see the problems, educators have to make the decision to find ways to help the "whole" child. Problems like alcoholism, homelessness, illiteracy, sexual abuse, and poverty are real concerns in the lives of our youth. Students are prepared for life beyond the campus of the school where their troubles spill over into the path of their education. Rex-Tar Dunbar learns how to be a man while he is finding his way as a student. This school becomes a foundation for students whose lives encounter life's sorrows that play a type of match-making that builds families before school days are over. To these students, school is more than it seems.
