The Turn of the Screw
Henry James
The Turn of the Screw is a gothic-ghost story. It is a brilliant story classified as New Criticism that creates confusion and suspense for the reader. An unnamed narrator listens to Douglas reading a manuscript written by the former governess whom Douglas claims to have known and who is now dead. The manuscript tells the story of how the young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the deaths of their parents. Written by Henry James, an American-British writer. He is regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He is best known for his novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. His method of writing from a character's point of view allowed him to explore issues related to consciousness and perception, and his style has been compared to impressionist painting.
