19 year old Henry Billups swore revenge against the three outlaws that robbed and murdered his parents in the frontier town of Indigo. Henry tried to learn to shoot so he could go after them. Virgil Petry, the town drunk because of an unknown dark incident in his past, said he would teach Henry. Virgil was proficient with firearms and he taught Henry to shoot. Virgil agreed to go with Henry to find the murderers. Henry and Virgil leave Indigo to the chagrin of Missy Baxter, who considered herself Henry's girlfriend. While on the trail, Henry, through circumstances, gets a reputation as a gunfighter, the Indigo Kid. When he returns to Indigo, his mission still not finished, he meets Julie Mays, the Sheriff's niece, and any feelings he had for Missy quickly evaporate. However, Missy tells him she is making plans for them to be married. Henry tells Missy he is not through with avenging his parents deaths and is leaving the next day to continue that quest. That rejection, and Missy discovering his friendship with Julie, has Missy trying to buy Henry's affection. She gets help from Sherman Baxter, who is her father and the owner of the Bank of Indigo. They use financial means to cajole Henry back to Missy and marriage. Sherman Baxter will pay for Henry's education at some eastern college if Henry marries Missy. Henry, still honoring his vow of revenge, leaves Indigo. Missy and her father resort to another financial crisis to try to destroy Henry. Their action forces Henry to ride the trails as the Indigo Kid again in an effort to raise a large amount of money to avert the crisis.
