This book is not about Bessie Beatty. Instead, it focusses on her accounts of Revolutionary Russia; published as The Red Heart of Russia (1918) and given as oral evidence to the Bolshevik propaganda Hearings before a subcommittee of the Committee on the judiciary, United States Senate (1919). Both records are informed by her experiences of Russia when, along with a number of American journalists, she reported on events there; in her case for the San Francisco Bulletin. In this, the centenary year of the Russian Revolution, both accounts are published together for the first time, in the hope that the first hand experience of what really happened, will prove more informative than the presentation of opinion as history.
