Ellen's friends and family are convinced she will never marry when the man she loves jilts her for her younger sister. Heartsick and humiliated, she decides to leave town to pay a long visit to her friend Rochelle, the daughter of Huguenot immigrants who have fled to America to escape persecution in France. In this new town she meets several young Huguenot men, recently arrived from France. But as she gets to know each of them better, she realizes that their histories and relationships are more complicated than she ever could have guessed.
