I am a Stranger in a Strange Land tells the story of a young Caribbean islander, Tio Mourillon, who leaves his fiancee behind to seek work in the UK. So, he sets sail on the SS Auriga - successor to the Empire Windrush - to arrive on English shores in May 1956. Immediately, he seeks work. He finds it in the booming, dangerous steelworks in the industrial north of England. He seeks a place to live. He finds a place in a rural Lincolnshire village in which his newly wed English wife grew up, but is told in no uncertain terms that this place is no place for him. The trouble, however, with Tio Mourillon is that he doesn't know his place. I am a Stranger in a Strange Land tells the story - based on true events in the life of the author's father - of one man's fight to buy a house and, in doing so, to establish his place in this world.
