Frederick Loring was a popular writer from a prominent Boston family. He and seven others were on a stage that was ambushed by Indians 8 miles west of Wickenburg, Arizona Territory, on November 5, 1871. Loring and four fellow travelers, along with the driver, were killed almost immediately. The awful news led to an outpouring of cries to exterminate all Indians in the Territory, and to perpetuation of a long-running frontier bloodbath that reverberated across the nation.
