From the Beginning: A Collection of Poetry and Creative Nonfiction is a collection of works by Jasmine Fleming that represent the experiences of her and others around her. The works show the lives of everyday people in the complex ways they come, including Southern, minority, adult, children, religious, and secular. This collection is meant to show the ways in which we are all unique, but also connected. Poem topics range from youthful views of complex situations, to family dynamics to materialism. The poetic forms demonstrated here are also varied, from sonnets to Ottava Rima, villanelles and more. This work is comprised mostly of poetry, but it also contains two essays which explore religion in the South and racism and multiculturalism.
