There's something wrong in America's Heartland. The good citizens of Brownsbury, Michigan are being lied to, but they don't seem to care. The town's resident crank, Darlene Matowski, has somehow managed to convince everyone that angels have been streaming down from Heaven to visit her during the long dark Northern nights. It's easily the most exciting thing ever to happen in boring old Brownsbury - whether or not it's true. But while the majority of the town gossips about the happenings out at the Matowski farm, they're slow to recognize other important developments. Redford Walker's hay barn gets demolished one fateful night and his prize-winning cow is brazenly stolen. Is it a hate crime against Brownsbury's only African-American family or is it something harder to explain? Meanwhile, over on the poor side of town, the Oliver family is rapidly descending into chaos. Religious zealot matriarch, Evelyn, becomes obsessed with catching the attention of Darlene's angels. Her recovering alcoholic husband, Howard, begins to steal nips of whiskey with increased regularity. Their son, Tracy, sneaks out of the house every night to satisfy his unholy urges. More mysteries begin popping up in the farmlands around Brownsbury. Who is the handsome stranger in the expertly cut suits who's been hanging around town, sending the womenfolk into swoons? Why has the FBI picked up Arabic chatter emanating from Brownsbury? And how on earth did a virgin end up pregnant? It all culminates when the skies open up in a spectacular display of Biblical proportions, bringing long-reaching implications for the citizens of Brownsbury...and possibly the whole human race.
