A letter threatening the murders of 9 persons is received at the Haverston Police Department. Clues to each victim's identity will be provided, as well as a time frame for each death, but of what use are roughly drawn sketches of ordinary objects or words? And why an exact number? Is there any way to unravel the reasoning for the deaths? Police Chief Ed Brannigan's hope that the letter was a crank is dashed with the first murder, and he relies heavily on Sgt. Erin Selby's instincts to unravel the killer's clues, but is she putting herself in danger by doing just that and would it matter to the Chief?
