Virginia Hamilton moved to Lawrence, Kansas to live with her Aunt Elise and Uncle Cooper. When she arrived she was given a ride to their ranch by a handsome ranch hand named Derek Lewis. On the train they meet another couple going to Texas; Roy and Madeline. The four of them quickly become friends. Then they become neighbors. Having adjoining ranches makes it easier for them to be there to help each other; the way neighbors should. Derek and Roy soon find out that their other neighbor is not as helpful. Henry Daniels is determined to destroy their chances of thriving on their land. Henry thinks he deserves to have their land added back to his ranch; as it was originally. Virginia and Madeline further fuel Henry's hatred of them when they help Henry's housekeeper escape his abuse.
