The age old struggle between rival civilizations broke out on the western plains in the year 1867. The population of the United States that for two hundred years had been creeping westward from the Atlantic coast like a mighty juggernaut, was now lumbering across the plains that stretch in undulating altitudes from the Missouri river to the Rocky Mountains. The Plains Indians understood that their lands were gone, but they were not going to give them up without a fight.
