At Middle Temple, once a grand monastery for the Knights Templar and now a college for barristers, Will hunts for the mysterious Holy Grail. This mystical stone the sorcerer Prospero calls Lapis Exillis is crucial in his quest to destroy the witch, Sycorax. The murder of a student during Will's budding play Hamlet sets detectives Will and Betts, his plucky best friend, on the trail for the killer. Curiously, Will finds clues within the original tale of the Danish prince to find the Holy Grail. In the shadowy realm of Middle Temple, Will encounters young explorer Walter Raleigh, future astronomer Galileo and the ghostly apparitions of Hamlet's father and the tragic lost princes.
Betts' romantic involvement with the enigmatic Cax, Prospero's handsome apprentice, fuels Will's jealousy. In addition Will is desperate to save his father and uncle, both sentenced to death as traitors to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
The quest for the magical stones leads Will to Stonehenge where his skills as a bard help him unearth the Rune of Earth hidden in the mystical world of the Druids.
