A widow with two young children in 19th century Malta marries a British Soldier and follows him to India leaving her children behind. She goes with the regiment to three postings and more children are born. After four years of hardship including the death of a baby, the couple return to Britain. There she is reunited with her two daughters who had both married former British Soldiers who had served in Malta.
